Academy of Natural Sciences' Invertebrate Paleontology collection is the oldest of its kind in the country, with a history that dates to the Academy's founding. One of its notable founders, Thomas Say (1787-1834), was a researcher specializing in mollusks, as well as recent and fossilized insects and other invertebrates. \n\nThe ANSP Invertebrate Paleontology collection is estimated to contain over 1 million specimens, including 5,000 type specimens from more than 100 authors. Many of these authors were early and influential figures in American and British paleontology. Some significant contributors to both the type and general collections include Timothy A. Conrad, William M. Gabb, Henry C. Lea, Isaac Lea, Samuel G. Morton, Axel A. Olsson, Anne Harbison, and Henry A. Pilsbry. \n\nThe collection is particularly strong in Cenozoic and Cretaceous mollusks from the New World, especially those found in the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains; it also includes Quaternary mollusks from around the globe and Mesozoic specimens from England. Notably, approximately 75% of the collection consists of molluscan The collection is particularly rich in catfishes (Order Siluriformes), minnows (Cypriniformes) and eels (Anguilliformes). Geographically, its strengths include freshwater species of North and South America and marine species of the North Atlantic and Indian Oceans. ANSP also has one of the world’s largest collections of fish types with 2,797 primary and 17,881 secondary type specimens representing 1,857 and 2,048 species/subspecies, respectively. In total, ANSP types represent ~3,086 species/subspecies and ~8.4% of all fish species ever named as such (as of Jan 2024). Specimens aside, staff have assembled and curate ~18,000 frozen tissue samples of thousands of fish species primarily from the U.S. and South Human sequences were excluded.2. For non-CONTIG records, the sample accession number (when available) along with the scientific name were used to identify sequence records corresponding to the same individuals (or group of organism of the same species in the same sample). Only one record was kept for each scientific name/sample accession number.3. Contigs and whole genome shotgun (WGS) records were added individually.4. The records that were missing some information were excluded. Only records associated with a specimen voucher or records containing both a location AND a date were kept.5. The records associated with the same vouchers are aggregated together.6. A lot of records left corresponded to individual sequences or reads corresponding to the same organisms. In practise, these were \"duplicate\" occurrence records that weren't filtered out in STEP 2 because the sample accession sample was missing. To identify those potential duplicates, we grouped all the remaining records by `scientific_name`, `collection_date`, `location`, `country`, `identified_by`, `collected_by` and `sample_accession` (when available). Then we excluded the groups that contained more than 50 records. To improve the matching of the EBI scientific name to the GBIF backbone taxonomy, we incorporated the ENA taxonomic information. The collection contains both freshwater and marine fish. Almost all of the objects are preserved on ethanol. The marine part of the collection is small and dates back to when there were research on marine fish at the museum, corresponding with when exploration and mapping of marine environments in central Norway started, initially the Trondheimsfjord, but later also coastal areas outside the fjord. The freshwater part of the collection is larger and dates mainly from late 1960's and up to today. This part of the collection contains mainly of anadromous salmonid species (Salmo salar and Salmo trutta, 65 % of the total fish collection). This is mainly due to the museum being involved in numerous projects investigating the effects of Norwegian freshwater systems being used for hydropower production. Todays collection covers most of the species found in the coastal areas and freshwater systems of central Norway. It contains a total of 248 species. The geographic coverage of the objects in this collection is mainly Norwegian mainland, Svalbard and Jan Mayen. To identify those potential duplicates, we grouped all the remaining records by `scientific_name`, `collection_date`, `location`, `country`, `identified_by`, `collected_by` and `sample_accession` (when available). Only a handful specimens in the collection date back to this period. From around 1870 an exploration and mapping of marine environments in central Norway started, initially the Trondheimsfjord, but later also coastal areas outside the fjord.\n\nSampling activities contributing preserved specimens have been at irregular intervals since the 1870s, and impact in number of objects and taxa represented has mainly been a result of several large projects. Apart from larger sampling programmes, small and single collecting activities has taken place over the period since the start. The collection holds about 120,000 records of most has been digitised. \n\nThe geographic span of the records are mainly Norwegian waters. Within Norwegian waters a majority origins in the central part of Norway, including the 600 m deep Trondheimsfjord, and the costal areas outside the fjord. In addition there are samples from along the Norwegian coast, primarily north of the Trondheimsfjord, also representing the deep-sea areas in the Norwegian Sea, and from Svalbard. Samples from international marine environments are mainly from neighbouring Nordic countries. But also a number of samples from the Tristan da Cunha archipelago in the South Atlantic, resulting from the Norwegian Tristan da Cunha Expedition 1937-38.\n\nAll animal phyla with known representing high number of taxa world-wide are represented, but it is obvious from the holdings that some groups are overrepresented compared to others. This reflects the taxonomic expertise among the staff since Vilhelm Storm started exploring the Trondheimsfjord in the1870s (Mork \u0026amp; Sneli 2011). \n\nNorwegian waters have been important for describing new species in the early days of natural history explorations, thus representing type localities for a range of marine species described from the 18th century onwards (Oug et al. 2014). The bulk of the collection dates from the 1960's and up to today and includes the Lepidoptera collection of Carl Fredrik Lühr and Runar Krogen, the Coleoptera collections of Karl Erik Zachariassen and Dagfinn Refseth. A recent acquisition of approximately 160 000 identified specimens came from Frode Ødegaard’s collection previously hosted at the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research.\n\nToday's collection covers most of the major groups of invertebrates with Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera and Hymenoptera as the largest parts of the collections (approximately 40 %, 20 %, 10 % and 7 % respectively in 2017). Some groups are overrepresented compared to others. This reflects the taxonomic expertise among the staff since the first regular employee in the 1840's and donations of private collections.\n\nThe collection includes objects from all other continents except the Antarctica. Examples from other parts of the world are chironomids from America, Africa, Europe and Asia, a historic circumpolar collection of Coleoptera. Human sequences were excluded.2. Only one record was kept for each scientific name/sample accession number.3. Contigs and whole genome shotgun (WGS) records were added individually.4. The records that were missing some information were excluded. Only records associated with a specimen voucher or records containing both a location AND a date were kept.5. The records associated with the same vouchers are aggregated together.6. A lot of records left corresponded to individual sequences or reads corresponding to the same organisms. In practise, these were \"duplicate\" occurrence records that weren't filtered out in STEP 2 because the sample accession sample was missing. To identify those potential duplicates, we grouped all the remaining records by `scientific_name`, `collection_date`, `location`, `country`, `identified_by`, `collected_by` and `sample_accession` (when available). Then we excluded the groups that contained more than 50 records. To improve the matching of the EBI scientific name to the GBIF backbone taxonomy, we incorporated the ENA taxonomic information.
