The blog series ‘IGSN ID Implementation Exemplars’ showcases sample management workflows developed by the community that incorporate IGSN ID registration. In each post, we offer practical guidance on how to work alongside disciplinary sample experts to register IGSN IDs within DataCite services.\n\nIn 2004, SESAR  (the System for Earth and Extraterrestrial Sample Registration) was the birthplace of the International Geo-Sample Number, the predecessor to the IGSN ID persistent identifier, was a founding member of the IGSN e.V. in 2011, and was heavily involved in the formation of the partnership with DataCite in 2021, whereby the IGSN PID infrastructure transitioned to become a  DataCite service. As a result, SESAR has a long experience of registering IGSN IDs for diverse stakeholders and communities and, to date, it has assigned over 5,300,000 IGSN IDs to material samples for its global user community. SESAR is hosted at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. As a project partner in the PID Network Germany project, DataCite addresses this need by bringing together stakeholders from research and cultural heritage sectors to strengthen the adoption, standardization, and practical implementation of persistent identifier (PID) systems in Germany. As part of this work, pilot implementations with LMU Munich and Technical University Dortmund explore how community-informed metadata guidance can be translated into concrete improvements in local repository and DOI workflows. These experiences closely align with DataCite’s vision of metadata as a shared global asset that is open, connected, reusable, and maintained through community collaboration. This interview explores how the pilot of TU Dortmund contributes to DataCite’s overall goal of improving metadata. As a project partner in the PID Network Germany project, DataCite addresses this need by bringing together stakeholders from research and cultural heritage sectors to strengthen the adoption, standardization, and practical implementation of persistent identifier (PID) systems in Germany. As part of this work, pilot implementations with LMU Munich and the Technical University Dortmund explore how community-informed metadata guidance can be translated into concrete improvements in local repository and DOI workflows. These experiences closely align with DataCite’s vision of metadata as a shared global asset that is open, connected, reusable, and maintained through community collaboration. By building open, community-driven infrastructure, DataCite supports research organizations of all sizes and across all regions in sharing and connecting their work through persistent identifiers (PIDs) and rich metadata, helping strengthen a global and inclusive research ecosystem.\n\nAt the same time, institutions in emerging research communities still face significant challenges. These include limited awareness of PIDs and open research infrastructure, a lack of local systems such as established data repositories, financial constraints, technical skill gaps, and language barriers — all of which can make it harder for communities to access and benefit from open infrastructure. These challenges highlight the need for tailored local engagement and outreach.\n\nTo help address these barriers, DataCite’s Global Access Fund (GAF) was launched in 2023 with initial support from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. A diverse group of over 30 participants came together, including DataCite community members as well as RDA-US colleagues,  to network, discuss shared challenges, and learn from one another’s experiences. The event convened a panel of speakers to examine the current landscape of research data in the US.
