This article reviews the chronology of the Alchi inscriptions previously studied and published by Tucci, Snellgrove and Skorupski, Denwood, Goepper in the light of recent advances in Tibetan paleography as well as grammatical considerations. Hitherto unpublished, the inscription of the west wall of the Great Chorten is studied and analyzed. This research also reconsiders the identifications of the Buddhist masters portrayed as a lineage in the upper floor of the Sumstek. Our research leads to conclude that Prof. Goepper's hypothesis of an early 13th century chronology for the foundation of Alchi is invalidated due to errors in his translation and assessment of the inscriptions.
