Internal Revenue Statistics of Income Division, Internal Revenue Service. Individual Income Tax Statistics - National Data: Average Amount by Line Item in Current Dollars | Line Item: Student loan interest deduction, 1998 - 2016. Data Planet™ Statistical Datasets: A SAGE Publishing Resource Dataset-ID: 020-001-003
Dataset: Reports the average amount per return in current dollars by line item. Values represent the average amount calculated across all returns reporting the specific line item listed.
Data are from Internal Revenue Service, Individual Master File (IMF) System, and are published as the Individual Complete Report Publication 1304, which contains complete individual income tax data. The statistics are based on a sample of individual income tax returns, selected before audit, which represents a population of Forms 1040, 1040A, and 1040EZ, including electronic returns. Data reported here include Selected Income and Tax Items (in Current and Constant Dollars) and represent counts of returns by line item and total amounts in current and constant dollars by line item. Average amounts by line item are also presented, which represent the average amount calculated across all returns reporting the specific filing type or line item listed. Data represents aggregates of all returns filed and processed through the IMF system during applicable calendar years, including any returns filed for previous tax years.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is a bureau of the United States Department of the Treasury. Its mission is to help US taxpayers understand and meet their tax responsibilities and enforce the law with integrity and fairness. The Revenue Act of 1916 mandated the annual publication of statistics related to “the operations of the internal revenue laws” as they affect individuals, businesses, estates, nonprofit organizations, trusts, investments abroad and foreign investments in the US. The Statistics of Income Division (http://www.irs.gov/taxstats/) fulfills this function by collecting and processing data and sharing data with other government agencies and the general public.
