Dataset: Presents the number of deaths by cause for males and females in the United States, segmented by state and county, according to decedent’s Hispanic origin, as recorded on death certificates. Information about the race and Hispanic ethnicity of the decedent is reported by the funeral director as provided by an informant, often the surviving next of kin, or, in the absence of an informant, on the basis of observation. The reporting area for Hispanic-origin item on the death certificate was first used in 1989 but it was not adopted by all states until 1997. For additional information on reporting of Hispanic origin, and its impact on data quality, see http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/series/sr_02/sr02_152.pdf.
Multiple Cause-of-Death Mortality Data from the National Center for Health Statistics National Vital Statistics System provide mortality data by multiple cause of death for all deaths occurring within the United States. Each record in the microdata is based on information abstracted from death certificates filed in vital statistics offices of each state and Washington, DC. Causes of death were coded according to the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD9) 1991-1998. This data subset presents counts of deaths based on Hispanic origin of decedent. NOTE: Subsequent updates of the dataset are coded with ICD10; the dataset is retained in Data-Planet as an archive.
