Traces the development of settlement in a rural Essex parish in the context of its surrounding area; why the various settlement components took the form they did, how buildings were planned and erected, and how they functioned. Flint scatters of Meso-BA date, BA ring ditches, LBA founders' hoards etc were succeeded by field systems of Middle and Late pre-Roman Iron Age, by a wealthy native farmstead, and by a large and sumptuous Gallo-Roman villa (early 2nd century to end of RB). Saxon structures, 10th century wooden church continually developed, manor equating with villa estate, hall.
