The Heritage Network was commissioned by Northaw and Cuffley PCC, to undertake an archaeological watching brief on the works to investigate the causes of cracks in the fabric at the west end of the present Church of St Thomas à Becket, Northaw, Herts. A Heritage Statement (Ashworth 2016) and a ground penetrating radar survey (Udyrysz 2016) indicated that foundations to the two earlier structures on the site are likely to have survived within and around the footprint to existing building, particularly at its western end. As part of the investigative works four small test pits were excavated close to the exterior walls at the west end of the church (Figure 2). All of the test pits were hand dug. The test pits revealed no clear evidence for the remains of the two previous churches on the site.
