The analysis of the characteristics of Los Zetas, former group of hitmen of the Gulf Cartel and currently independent, allows describing the novelty that this non-state actor has brought to the conflict among Mexican drug trafficking organizations, and between them and the Mexican state. In fact, Los Zetas modus operandi requires a redefinition of drug-related violence in Mexico. It illustrates both contemporary challenges in the violence promoted by non-state organizations, and their links with public institutions. However, they do not fit into the concepts of insurgency or paramilitary.
