Child abuse, via designs, used to be perceived as a western disease. It has however spread deep into sub-Saharan Africa with the widespread of design knowledge, application and research. Yet, health and design studies seem to be quiet about this trend which has social, behavioural and health consequences, despite its prospects. Abuse via designs poses a threat to two major constructs of UNICEF including child protection and health. This multidisciplinary study, therefore, offers critique of selected persuasive product designs and design contents with emphasis on the emerging trend of child-character centred persuasive drives and designs. Every persuasive designer or a sponsor of a persuasive campaign has an objective: to achieve influence or acceptability which in turn translates into some forms of benefits or profits. Adopting a blend of literature/product review and a fair content analysis method, the study establishes evidences of the adoption of child-characters as key-drivers in major identifiable persuasive campaigns, designs and systems. While this trend might have proven relatively effective for the achievement of the objectives of persuasive design creators and sponsors, it however poses major implications for the healthy development and adjustment of children who are often exposed to unhealthy influences in the running of the persuasive systems. Hence, this study recommends a conscious query, by appropriate authorities,of such persuasive designs and systems with a view to curbing possible abuses and negative influences where it appears to exist.
