Introducing Chip Design using Speed of Light
7th International CONCEIVE DESIGN IMPLEMENT OPERATE Conference
2011
2011
We present a novel didactical concept for undergraduate teaching of
microelectronics based on an experiment using a CMOS cyclic pulse-shrinking
time-to-digital-converter (TDC) in order to directly measure the speed of
light. The experimental setup, the didactical concept of teaching the TDC
operating principle, an example realization of a TDC for didactical purposes
and an actual research application are described. Our concept fits into the
CDIO framework with emphasis on design-build experience and on project-based
learning in cooperation with and at the aims of industry. Evaluation of the
courses shows that the acceptance of the concept is above 90%.
