in 1 Butyl 1 methylpyrrolidinium trifluormethansulfonat (([Py 1,4 ]TfO näher untersucht.
Refractory metals are characterized by very high melting points. Due to their
numerous
applications, galvanic coatings of components with refractory metals are of great interest. The
high costs, the difficult handling and high corrosivity of the melts are a great disadvantage.
Titanium and vanadium cannot be deposited from aqueous solution due to the ir
thermodynamic properties. An electrochemical deposition would only be possible at more
negative potentials than the formation of hydrogen in aqueous solutions. In addition, these
metals oxidize immediately in water. Ionic liquids (ILs) have a wide electrochemical stability
(electrochemical window) and can be used under an hydrous conditions . Therefore, ILs are an
interesting alternative to aqueous and organic electrolytes for the electrochemical deposition
of titanium and vanadium.
In
scope of this work the titanium deposition from the IL 1 butyl 1 methylpyrrolidinium
bis(t rifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([Py 1,4 ]TFSA) with TiCl 4 as Ti precursor was investigated.
No elemental titanium could be deposited on gold. Raman spectroscopy showed a strong
interaction between TiCl 4 and the TFSA anion. These complexes could be the cause th at
prevents titanium deposition from TiCl 4 . Since GaCl 3 can influence deposition processes,
GaCl 3 was used as an additive in the deposition of titanium with Ti(C 5 H 5 2 ( 2 and
Ti(OC 3 H 8 4 as Ti precursors in 1 butyl 1 methylpyrrolidinium trifluoromethanesu lfonate
([Py 1,4 ]TfO). The deposition from Ti(OC 3 H 8 4 in [Py 1,4 ]TfO with GaCl 3 as an additive had a
cauliflower like microcrystalline structure. The X ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that
titanium gallium alloys were formed in these systems.
F
or vanadium deposition from ILs fundamental electrochemical experiments were performed
with V(C 5 H 5 2 Cl 2 as V precursor in [Py 1,4 TFSA. The deposition on copper at room
temperature had a large proportion of carbon. Deposits from 1 p ropyl 1 methylpyrrolidinium
bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) amide ([Py 1,3 TFSA) contained significantly less carbon and more
vanadium than the deposits from [Py 1,4 ]TFSA. This is due to a larger electrochemical window
of the ionic liquid [Py 1,3 TFSA and thus higher electrochemical stability for the deposition of
vanadium. The X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed a C V bond,
indicating the formation of vanadium carbide , and XRD show ed the same results
