While print, audio and visual media in the United States were slightly delayed in reporting on the revelation of his service in the Waffen - SS during the brief period of time it was reported on, the coverage was well informed and revealing.
Reports in the nationally significant print media – New York Times, Time, Newsweek, and The New Yorker will be analyzed – as well as broadcasts on National Public Radio and National Public Television. The coverage in each media venue makes apparent the dependence of American coverage on German media sources from DIE ZEIT on down and on the opinions of German intellectuals (Peter Schneider and Michael Jürgs). Furthermore, the visual materials embedded in the television broadcasts – marching SS battalions, for example – ‘interpret’ the story in a visually powerful, not to say sensationalistic manner. A concluding evaluation of the media coverage in terms of the overall American ‘fascination’ for Germany’s Nazi past adds a further dimension to the study. (Quelle: Exposé von Prof. Dr. Richard E.
