Despite years of elimination efforts, lead poisoning remains one of the most devastating and costly environmental health risks for children. Lead poisoning often has been called a silent epidemic because its presence is often not recognized until after damage has occurred. Young children with elevated blood lead levels most often show no symptoms, yet are suffering from the real and harmful effects of lead poisoning. (Summit for 2010, 2005)
