The dataset is provided as a single archive: Experimental_machining_dataset.zip

The archive contains one root folder named Experimental_machining_dataset. This root folder is divided into eight main dataset variants:

EDM_PCBN, EDM_PCD, Grinding_PCBN, Grinding_PCD, Laser_PCBN, Laser_PCD, REDM_PCBN and REDM_PCD.

Each main folder name combines the manufacturing technology used for cutting edge preparation with the cutting tool material. PCBN denotes polycrystalline cubic boron nitride and PCD denotes polycrystalline diamond. Each dataset variant contains three numbered subfolders, 01, 02 and 03, representing individual tested cutting inserts or repeated experimental variants.

 

The internal structure of each numbered subfolder is organized according to the evaluated area. The dataset includes two main groups of experimental data:

1. Cutting edge quality

This part contains data describing the condition of the cutting edge before machining. It is divided into the following folders:



Cutting_edge_surface_roughness


Contains data describing the surface roughness of the cutting edge. The folders typically include Description.rtf, ExperimentalSetupAndConditions.rtf, MeasuredData_CuttingEdgeTip.csv and MeasuredData_LinearPartOfCuttingEdge.csv.



Geometrical_characteristics_of_the_cutting_edge


Contains data describing the cutting edge geometry. The folders typically include DatasetDescription.rtf, ExperimentalSetupAndConditions.rtf, MeasuredData_ToolTipCuttingEdge.csv and MeasuredData_LinearPartOfCuttingEdge.csv.

2. Tool cutting performance

This part contains data describing the behaviour of the cutting tool during and after machining. It is divided into the following folders:



Cutting_forces_during_machining


Contains cutting force measurements recorded during machining. The folders typically include Description.rtf, ExperimentalSetupAndConditions.rtf and MeasuredData.csv.



Machined_surface_roughness


Contains data describing the roughness of the machined surface. The folders typically include Description.rtf, ExperimentalSetupAndConditions.rtf and MeasuredData.csv.



Tool_wear


Contains data describing tool wear at the end of tool life or after the evaluated machining process. The folders include Description.rtf and MeasuredData.csv. Some Tool_wear folders also include ExperimentalSetupAndConditions.rtf and image files such as FlankWearMeasurement.png and RakeFaceWearMeasurement.png documenting the wear measurement.
